Ordering 2000 branded reusable bags for CES next year. What type gets actually reused vs thrown away? I don’t want to waste budget on bags that end up in the trash. Looking at non-woven PP and cotton tote options but can’t decide.

15 years in the promotional products industry. The key metric for promotional reusable bags is “keep rate” — what percentage of attendees actually take the bag home and use it again. From our surveys: thin non-woven PP (60-80gsm) has about a 30-40% keep rate. Heavy non-woven (100gsm+) jumps to 55-65%. Cotton totes with good construction hit 75-85%. The game changer? Bag design. Bags that look like a nice accessory rather than a billboard get kept way more often. I’ve seen a company hand out simple natural cotton totes with a small embroidered logo — people were actually asking for them by day two. For CES specifically, consider RPET bags with the recycled angle — tech crowd loves that sustainability story. Expect to pay $1.00-$2.00 per bag for something that’ll actually get used beyond the event. Cheaper bags are a false economy.

Organize about 8 major conferences a year. Our best performer by far was a 140gsm cotton canvas tote from Y Eco Bag with a simple single-color print. Cost was $1.45/unit for 2000. We handed them out at registration and by lunch on day one, about half the attendees in the hall were carrying them. The branding exposure was incredible. Two things I learned: (1) Make the bag big enough for a tablet/laptop — like 16″x16″ with a 4″ gusset. Every conference bag needs to fit an iPad and a water bottle. (2) Include an internal pocket for a phone or badge. That one feature doubled our bag usage. For trade show bags, utility is everything. If your bag solves a problem the attendee has right now (carrying event materials), they’ll keep using it.

Print technician with 10 years running bag production jobs. For corporate event bags at 2000 quantity, here’s your print method options and costs. Screen printing: most cost-effective at $0.05-$0.10 extra per color per bag. Best for simple logos, solid colors. Heat transfer: allows full-color photo prints at $0.15-$0.25 extra per bag. Better for complex designs but can peel over time if not done right. Sublimation: only works on polyester/RPET, gives permanent full-color, costs $0.20-$0.30 extra per bag. Most durable option. Embroidery: most premium, $0.50-$1.00 extra per bag, only practical for small logos on cotton bags. For CES where you want to look polished, I’d recommend screen print on woven PP or cotton — clean, professional, won’t peel. If you want photo-quality, go sublimation on RPET. Skip heat transfer for event bags, they go through too much handling.

I go to about 10 trade shows a year and I probably have 40+ event bags at home. Want to know which ones I actually use? The ones that: fit my laptop, have a zippered pocket for my phone/wallet, and don’t scream CORPORATE GIANT in obnoxious colors. My current favorite is a simple black RPET tote from a 2023 conference with a tone-on-tone logo. Looks like a normal bag I’d buy at a store. I’ve been using it for two years. Please for the love of god don’t do white bags — they get filthy by day two and nobody wants to carry a stained bag around. Dark colors or natural cotton look better longer.

If you’re at CES, the audience will 100% notice if you’re giving out greenwashed junk. A thin non-woven PP bag that disintegrates is a bad look for a tech company claiming sustainability values. Go with RPET (recycled bottles) or organic cotton if your brand can afford it. Have a QR code printed on the bag that links to the bag’s environmental story — “This bag is made from 6 recycled PET bottles, saving X grams of CO2 vs virgin plastic.” Attendees love that transparency. Also, if you’re serious about sustainability, use a supplier with third-party certifications. Y Eco Bag carries GRS-certified RPET bags and OCS-certified organic cotton options. Your sustainability report will thank you.
